Villa Galania, Armeni, Crete  Sunday Times

*** Featured in Sunday Times "Europe's 100 Sexiest Summer Villas" ***  Free wifi

Set on a small hill above the village of Armeni and only 800 metres from Armeni village square, Villa Galania is ideally placed to enjoy the rural idyll whilst still being within reasonable walking distance of local shops and tavernas and just ten minutes by car from the sandy beaches of Kalives.

Parking the car for the first time and then walking up past a small copse of Holme Oak trees where a hammock has been slung and around the corner of the villa, it is easy to imagine you have stepped into a page of Harpers Bazaar or Vogue  The pale pastel rose facade of the villa and beautiful pool at one with the serenely peaceful backdrop of rural Crete and the White Mountains which may still have snow during Easter Holidays in Crete.

The young owners of Villa Galania have created a very atmospheric period style property with the skillful use of simple local materials. Covered balconies and terraces provide shade and respite from the heat of the sun, whilst the villas stone faced doorways and rough hewn timbered ceilings add an authentic touch of the past. Despite the historic Crete flavour, Villa Galania is furnished and equipped to a very high standard and the owners really have ticked all the boxes down to the smallest detail.

Outside around the 9m x 4m pool and adjoining children's pool, there's a huge amount of living space including a smart alfresco cover dining area, a lounge area, a table soccer, plus a rusticated covered barbecue complete with Cretan oven and a small fridge for drinks.

To one side there's a large area of lawn and in the shade of the Holme Oaks is a well stocked herb garden with the folk song classics of parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme as well marjoram, mint and a number of other local herbs that Kleanthi uses for brewing tea.

The ground floor is open plan with warm terracotta style tiled floors throughout  and decorated with interesting rural artefacts and attractive wall hangings.  To one side is a dining area with table and chairs and beyond  is the small well equipped kitchen, with a very large fridge  freezer full oven with ceramic hobs and a dishwasher plus a kitchen sink with the bonus of lovely rural views towards the mountains.

At first floor level and reached by a wooden staircase is one twin bedroom (A/C) with en-suite shower room and the slightly extravagant master bedroom with double bed (A/C), lovely stone fireplace and en-suite bathroom with a lavish corner bath to languish in. Both bedrooms have warm and tactile wood floors and french doors opening out onto covered balconies overlooking the pool and with views towards the mountains.

From the landing at the top of the stairs a few steps lead up to a tiny gallery with a desk and chair.

Off the living area at ground floor level of the villa is a further guest shower room where there is also a washing machine. The villa also has a TV with DVD player and a portable CD player.

Location of Villa Galania
Armeni, Crete

Something of a foodies paradise, the village of Armeni is notable for its large shady plain trees lining the main street where you will find a choice of simple cafenions and three excellent tavernas. There is also a small mini -market and amazingly, a well stocked delicatessen with wonderful local cheeses, yoghurt and charcuterie as well as a large choice of frozen fish! Of a morning, fresh bread is delivered to the cafenion on the small triangular central square, you'll see what we mean! Nearby Kalives (approx 5min drive) 18 km east of Chania and strung along the edge of Souda Bay, Kalives is still very much a Greek village that has taken tourism in its stride and the bustling main street reflects the status quo with local shops, mini markets, tavernas and cafes happily doing business with all and sundry.

"Everything was perfect. The villa is really beautiful, and the village nearby is charming. The best airbnb expérience we ever had. Thank you so much for renting us this amazing villa, we couldn’t be happier with our stay. We’re looking forward to come back as soon as we can"
Spectacular backdrop
"Villa exactly as described and even better everything available, what you need and more. The welcome bag with a small basic equipment (beer, wine, water, fruit, milk, etc.) was awesome, as we arrived in the middle of the night. Access to the house is also easy at night, the directions are good and you should follow them exactly. The view of the mountains is great and makes a spectacular backdrop when swimming in the pool."
Herausragende haus
"Tolle Aussicht, vorbefüllter Kühlschrank (!), problemloser Check-in+out, hervorragende Kommunikation, schöner Pool, komfortable Villa, herausragende Sauberkeit, sehr gute Anfahrtbeschreibung, schöne Schlafzimmer und Bäder, Tischkicker ein Riesenspaß! Wir sind begeistert! :-)"
Just great !!
"Great view, wine, juice, beer and water in the fridge (!), Easy check-in + out, excellent communication, nice pool, comfortable villa, outstanding cleanliness, very good directions, nice bedrooms and bathrooms, table football was great fun! We are Pleased! :-)"
Would Stay forever !
"This villa is amazing. The pool was incredible and the outdoor space was a welcome haven. We loved going into the village of Armeni and the nearby beach town of Kalyves. We even enjoyed our sheep and goat neighbours. Would have stayed forever if we could have !"
Wonderful Villa
"A wonderful villa on the edge of the village everything about it is five stars . We had the pleasure of meeting the owners who could not have been kinder ,at some time in the future we will return to this fantastic villa"
Nick Chamberlain
A Cretan Delight
"This villa is an absolute gem. We found it really easily, thanks to the very clear directions. The welcome package is lovely - wine, water, fruit and delicious biscuits amongst other items. The kitchen is well stocked with pots and pans as well as basics such as coffee, tea and spices etc. The décor is delightful and the whole place was spotless. Everything has been thought of. The tv/dvd (blu ray too) worked easily and there are a couple of drawers of useful Crete books and English novels. The pool is a fantastic temperature and, for once, our youngest never got blue lips! It is a good depth at the deep end but no diving. The table football gave us many hours of fun. The different seating areas afford shade at different points of the day but there is generally a gentle breeze. The views are stunning. Coffee at 8am overlooking the White Mountains is breath-taking. The church bells are comforting and after the first 24 hours, you become used to the cicadas! We loved trying to work out which group would start up the chorus first. We walked into Armenoi village a couple of times for supper - good food at the big taverna next to the river. Cut through towards the taverna about three-quarters down the hill. We didn't use the mini-market or coffee shop purely because we forgot about them until the last day! The owners have done an amazing job with this villa and it is a real family affair when they come and clean. They came three times during our two weeks and the sons garden and clean too - a lesson to be learnt by our children! Chania is a 40 minute drive and we loved shopping in Old Town. For our family of 4, it was utterly perfect. Secluded and beautiful - we loved it. "

"Villa Galania is superb. We return there again and again. We've been customers of Freelance on Crete for about 15 or 20 years, and we've always found every aspect of their service to be absolutely impeccable."
Beautiful villa, gorgeous location
"This is a beautiful villa in a stunning location. We do have very high standards for our accommodation and always spend a long time choosing the perfect villa - and this really was just that! It is even better than the photographs show. The villa has everything you could possibly need and the local representative Diane was extremely helpful with the few queries we did have. The lovely Chania is only 15-20 mins drive away and we did tend to go there most nights for a walk, shopping and dinner. The local village is a 10 min stroll away to buy fresh bread, pastries and other supplies- and a stop for a drink in the local taverna under the trees to watch the "world" go by is a must! The people are so friendly! To summarise - this is a villa we will definitely return to for it's sheer beauty and location. Freelance Holidays are also an extremely professional & helpful company whom we would definitely use again. Highly recommended."

Absolute bliss!
"We (a family of 4 with a son and daughter aged 14 and 12) spent 10 fantastic days at Villa Galania in July last year. This was our first villa holiday and it couldn't have been better. The whole experience exceeded our expectations. Villa Galania was spotlessly clean and very well equipped both inside and out but it is the outside space which really makes the villa so special The outside space is absolutely fantastic and the views are amazing. It has everything you need for a wonderfully relaxing time. We had great times in the pool and relaxing poolside and the hammock was perfect for some time in the shade. We also enjoyed sitting outside at night under the stars with a glass of wine. The villa is very private - the roadway to the villa is shared with another villa which is close by but Villa Galania has clear views and is not overlooked. Armeni, an unspoilt, untouristy small village, is close at hand with a fantastic butcher and baker and we would sometimes walk to buy fresh bread in the morning. However, we didn't walk into the village at night because we felt that the unlit roadway to the villa would be difficult to negotiate in the dark - others might feel differently. We loved watching the locals playing chess and dominoes at the local café bar as we passed through the village. Armeni also has a fabulous taverna - the busy one in the centre whose name escapes me. The food was delicious and extremely well-priced. We also enjoyed eating out in Chania and by the sea in Almerida and had a couple of barbecues at the villa. We enjoyed visits to Knossos and Chania and went to a nearby water park and these are all highly recommended. However, our happiest family times were spent at Villa Galania and we all agreed that this was one of our best holidays ever. I felt a lump in my throat as we drove away from the villa and we would all hope to return one day. I think that is the sign of a great holiday! :-) As ever, Freelance Holidays were brilliant to deal with and all the information provided was excellent. "

Luxurious and relaxing
"The outside space at Villa Galania really is wonderful. The toddler pool was great for our 2 and 4 year old and the views are amazing. The villa itself was lovely and clean and the cleaner visited regularly. Only a short drive to Kalives where we went for dinner most nights. Taverna's we recommend include: Provlita and Kritiko in Kalives and Lagos is Almirida. Had a day trip to Lake Kournas and rented a pedal boat which the children loved. Also had a lovely day out at Marathi beach."

Perfect Relaxation - guaranteed
"Villa Gallania was just perfect for us! Complete relaxation in perfect peace with the most magnificent views, all against the backdrop of the dramatic mountains. It was well equipped, perfectly clean and comfortable. The outside space and the pool is superb. We used the local baker and mini market and 2 of the 3 restaurants in the village and found them all to be very good value and friendly. We walked the spectacular Areni gorge, walked along the beach at Kalevos, visited Rythymnon and Chania by car. Diane was very helpful and the owners whom we met were also very quick to respond and offer help. The whole holiday experience, from the point of initial enquiry, booking, arranging car hire etc - was all very easy and worked perfectly. Absolutely no worries, doubts or uncertainties - which is of course exactly what you want! We would certainly use "freelance" again and would love the opportunity of returning to Villa Gallania "
Polly Bull
We loved it
"This is a perfect place to unwind and relax. The views of the mountains are beautiful and constantly changing in the light so you never tire of it. We enjoyed the fact that we were removed from the village slightly, the shops and tavernas only a short drive away. The pool was perfect for us and would be for our young children had we brought them. The welcome pack was great and with so much fresh fruit! We would defiantly book this villa again. The only problem with writing such a good review is it means the villa might be fully booked up next time we want to visit! The only tiny complaint we had was that we couldn't work out how to turn the outside lights on and the only knife in the kitchen was blunt - both easily overcome! "

"Simply Superb!"
"Villa Galania is luxurious accommodation offering magnificent views of the snow capped hills (we visited in April) and countryside. It is situated 600m from a lovely little village (Armenoi) complete with mini market, bakery (must try their ham and cheese pie) delicatessen and several tavernas. The national highway is only 5 minutes drive away which means it is ideal to explore the Chania and Rethymnon regions. We came to enjoy the beaches (Falassarna), walk the gorges (Imbros) and enjoy the character of Rethymnon and Chania, not to mention the rural feel of places like Argiroupoli (a must). All of theses places are within easy driving distance. We even managed a day trip to Heraklion (Knossos & museum) - 1.5hrs away. The team and Freelance are excellent to deal with and in my view outperform any other agency I have dealt with. You will not be disappointed - in fact, you will not want to leave Villa Galania."
Hans van Leeuwen
Fantastic Service & Villa
"I just wanted to send you a quick message to thank you for the fantastic service you have provided. My family and I loved Crete and Villa Galania is simply superb. The additional touches provided by Freelance by way of; welcome pack, emails, advice, maps/instructions, information book, cleaning service etc makes your business far superior to any other websites I have used (and I have been fortunate to have booked many holidays/breaks over the last three years). The only regrets I have is that we couldn't stay longer in Crete and that I didn't come across your website sooner (my tour in Europe is drawing to a close and my family and I will soon relocate back to New Zealand). I will certainly recommend your business to my friends here in France. Hans"
Terrific Villa
"Villa Galania has a number of prime assets to its credit : the excellent swimming pool and beautiful grounds, a tranquil and quiet location of some isolation, although also very convenient for the village of Armeni and the town of Kalives, and simply stunning views of the White Mountains every day. This was our third stay at the villa. Inside, the villa is well equipped with a large fridge freezer - essential for a Cretan villa holiday in my view - and a dishwasher, electric cooker and microwave oven in a small-ish kitchen area. The bedrooms have firm, very comfortable beds and there are shower facilities in each room (as well as down stairs in the toilet there). Both bedrooms have air conditioner units. Downstairs in the living area, there is an CRT television and a very basic DVD player. There is also a small TV upstairs in the main bedroom. Both TVs are supposedly set up to receive satellite transmissions via the giant dish on the property's roof, though I've rarely been able successfully to view anything, and even when I have been successful, it's been some impenetrable Greek version of 321 or such like. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, as frankly I don't choose to come on holiday to watch TV. "
David Turnbull
Thank you Freelance and Villa Galania owners
"I could write pages about how good this place is - but that would just spoil it for you. The owners and agents (Freelance) have thought of everything to make this a perfect place to have a holiday. You will probably never get that far from the pool as it is quite simply stunning. However the house itself is lovely and very well maintained - and with everything you would ever need provided for you (e.g. washing machine, dish washer, pool towels, plenty of house towels, a shady place to park the car out of the blazing sun, pool inflatables, coffee filters, tin foil, loads of crockery and glasses, spices, even a bottle of wine and some bottles of spirits!). The local village (10 mins easy walk to the center) is amazing - real Greece with lovely Tavernas, old guys sitting in the bar playing games all day and an old lady that herds her sheep through the village center every night - quite simply beautiful. I must mention the neighbors too, a lovely bunch of goats who are always pleased to see you! I better stop or I will write pages. I should however mention Freelance Holidays - I was a bit wary about booking through a company I had never heard off - but these guys are superb - and so much nicer dealing with a small company that cares about the customer than a large PLC that is just there to provide its CEO's bonus. I will probably be back at this place again - and if all the Freelance Holiday's villas are a good a this one I will definitely be booking through Freelance again. Well done Freelance and well done the owners of Villa Galania - you have made this probably the most enjoyable holiday I have had."

A perfect holiday villa!!
"As on Radio 2 with Simon Mayo, it is 3 word Wednesday, I can think of the following for our stay at Villa Galania... perfect holiday villa!! Honestly, the villa has the best views, the pool was brilliant for our son, the location was perfect, the bedrooms were great. And the fact that both rooms were so beautiful is so refreshing. So often in a villa there is an obvious master room and then the second room is an after thought but in the case of Villa Galania, the second bedroom is delightful with its own bathroom and balcany. Can't fault it..thank you "
Jo Fuller
Beautiful with wonderful views
"We were both very impressed with Freelance Holidays. Your contact prior to the holiday was just right. Diane was really friendly and helpful and when we had no electricity one morning was again helpful and made sure we were ok. The accomodation was beautiful with wonderful views of the mountains and so much thought had been put it into it. We liked the way that you felt remote but that actually you were still in a village with great access to the local roads. Another plus though was being surrounded by wildlife at the villa - the swallows, butterflies and other birds, it was perfect. With the price of the euro at the moment we were keen to eat in a bit. The first night we got in extra supplies (although, in the event, had enough in our welcome pack) from the local supermarket in Kalives - we found out later that prices vary and it is as well to shop around a bit. The tavernas in Kalives were awesome - the town had a great atmosphere - local but friendly. I'm ashamed to say that we didn't do much sight seeing. We went to the mountain village of Spilli which was lovely and also to Chania but not much more - we really were there to relax! We will both go back to Crete and Villa Gallania again - as it was wonderful place for a holiday. My parents have used you several times before - hence the reccomendation! "
Gerald Bird
Loved It !
"Western Crete has really wonderful sandy safe beaches with lovely warm water. We loved Kato Doratsos as it was a sheltered small bay and also Falarsana with its huge unspoilt strands and lively safe sea. If you want a gorge but dont like getting up in the morning try Imbros. It's like Samaria but shorter and without the boat ride. The towns in land are more interesting than some of the coastal resorts - try places like Vrisses and Vamos. Of course Armeni was really nice too with its natural springs , big agricultural plain and THAT villa with the 270 deg view! "
Ian and Pam
Fab Villa
"We liked the Villa and its position and hope to return. With the temperature at 30+ we gave the walk back from Armeni a miss though! Both Tavernas across the road from the church in Armeni were good as were those near the harbour in Kalives. "
Linda Turner
Luxurios holiday home
"A superb luxurious holiday home which we really enjoyed. The swimming pool area is a delight."
Joana Davies
"We had a really lovely time - we all described the location as paradise and that it was the best holiday we have ever had. The information in the map section of the villa book was fantastic - we really appreciated all the detail especially the guide to parking in Chania. Our rep was very helpful in solving problems and answering queries - she helped us fix the satellite tv which was a good distraction for the children on particularly hot afternoons on our second week and advised us on the best place to get one of the children's ear infections seen to as well. A brilliant experience for all the family and I wish we were still there!"

The coolest villas in Greece

From the Peloponnese to the islands of Paxos, Crete, Santorini, Cephalonia, Lefkada, Symi and Corfu, we've 17 of the finest

Sean Newsom Published: 23 March 2010

"Villa Galania, Crete - sleeps 4

It might lack a little architectural grace, or Cretan atmosphere, but this well-equipped hill-top house near the north coast would make a superb setting for go-nowhere family holiday. It’s the array of outside spaces that make it special: there’s a children’s pool next to the main pool, shady terraces and balconies, a big deck with wicker armchairs and table football, a separate barbecue area complete Cretan oven, and a herb garden. Chances are, you’ll never get bored. Chania airport is 40 minutes’ drive.  01789 297705, freelance-holidays.co.uk "

Your experience can benefit someone else too, so just send us your thoughts and we will add them as appropriate to our website.
