A sophisticated and charming Villa with the extravagant addition of an indoor *heated jacuzzi pool on the lower level, the true worth of Villa Amvrosia is in its matchless outside space. Location of Villa Amvrosia
Armeni, Crete

Something of a foodies paradise, the village of Armeni is notable for its large shady plain trees lining the main street where you will find a choice of simple cafenions and three excellent tavernas. There is also a small mini -market and amazingly, a well stocked delicatessen with wonderful local cheeses, yoghurt and charcuterie as well as a large choice of frozen fish! Of a morning, fresh bread is delivered to the cafenion on the small triangular central square, you'll see what we mean! Nearby Kalives (approx 5min drive) 18 km east of Chania and strung along the edge of Souda Bay, Kalives is still very much a Greek village that has taken tourism in its stride and the bustling main street reflects the status quo with local shops, mini markets, tavernas and cafes happily doing business with all and sundry.

Loved it !
"We absolutely loved our stay. Everything was perfect, great location 10 minutes from the beach but very private. Very spacious villa, big pool, really comfortable, padded sun loungers etc. By far the best Villa I’ve been to."
Anna & family
Such a special place
"Was a memorable holiday in such a special place, with beautiful view, surrounded by mountains, in an island with so many wild and unique beaches."
We fell in love.....
"The whole family fell in love with this house as soon as we arrived! We’ve stayed in a few villas before but this one really stands out. The place is kept so perfectly and built with strength and beauty. Each room, window, chair, lounger and balcony is perfectly angled to make the most of the stunning scenery. Whilst in the pool we could gaze at snow capped mountains and the comfortable sun loungers were set ideally for sun soaking throughout the day. The rooms and bathrooms are lovely. In some respects the 4 story structure feels castle-like, towering over the olive groves. The view from the seating area in the main bedroom is fab, over acres of olive groves to a town (which twinkles at night in the distance on the hillside)with the mountains set behind it. At night you can hear the noise of goat and sheep bells tinkling and the dawn chorus is amazing. There is a small poolroom/ kids drawing & play area in the basement but we didn’t make much use of it when being outside was such a pleasure. There are many little niches around the outside of the house, hammock and swing, front garden with a bridge over a rockery, ping pong table, raised gazebo overlooking pool and mountains, bird Avery with white peacocks and the barbecue house is something else. It’s such an incredibly pleasant space to relax - which for an bbq building was a real surprise! The bbq has its own extraction, there’s a 2nd equipped kitchen and preparation areas all lit beautifully, a large family dining table and comfortable cushion seating next to large, bright and airy windows. There was a lovely welcome pack on arrival with generous and thoughtful treats. Antonio and Clari were lovely and let myself and the kids pick lemons from the wild garden which separates this villa from the one next door. The villa is very private too with several stone walls and wild garden with trees separating this villa from the villa from the only house nearby. The villa is positioned very conveniently 5 mins drive the main East-West road across Crete so travelling anywhere is potentially possible. We made trips to Spili and Phaistos, even Heraklion for the kids to go to Watercity- a highlight for them (and us too). Chania is just round the corner and the coast is 5-10 mins away too. I’d completely recommend this villa! It’s great! Many thanks for an idillic, hassle free stay"
"Villa Amvrosia is beautifully located with an impressive mountain view and with a great connection to local beaches and Chania. The Villa is perfectly equipped for a family getaway with all little details starting with pool towels and ending with the nice little touches like fresh local fruits or a chilled bottle of wine in the fridge. Freelance were very responsive and accommodating, we're so grateful for extra heated pool for the colder days! Definitely recommend to anyone looking to experience calm and relaxing holidays on Crete."
"We really liked our Cretan home. It was the MOST ideal vacation house/pool set up ever. We have rented lots of houses with pools, but I particularly loved this one. Amazing pool furniture, deep, corners to swim around, a dolphin in the bottom (loved that), and white-capped mountains in the distance. Gorgeous. Our boys loved the ping pong table the best, used the pool as a polar-plunge for the loser of each game. It was great. Gorgeous. (And the animals around the property were SOOOOO much fun! added bonus!)”"

Beautiful villa with great facilities
"Beautiful villa with great facilities. We appreciated that there were several shady areas to sit in as it was very hot when we were there. Some thoughtful touches eg we arrived late and appreciated the welcome pack to tide us over. The villa is in a beautiful setting on the outskirts of the village, a little isolated and a car is essential. There are several good tavernas in the village plus a bakery and a small mini market for basics but you will need to go into Kalyves for a wider choice. The village was a short walk away (although the return trip was uphill) but not really feasible to walk in the heat of the day. The kitchen was well stocked and even had washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, herbs and spices etc. There is a hairdryer but it is fixed in one of the bathrooms. Great WiFi connection. There is a beautiful barbecue room available for use within the grounds. The hosts came twice each week to clean and change beds and towels. We weren’t able to be out on one occasion but they were very accommodating and worked around us. They also tidied up the grounds and cut the grass etc. Would definitely recommend this villa and these hosts. "

So lovely we didn’t want to leave
"Our contact was so amazing and assisted so quickly with any questions we had during our stay. The place is exactly as advertised and so lovely we didn’t want to leave! There are so many amenities and so much space, we didn’t even have time to utilize it all, it’s impossible to be bored here. "
Beautiful Villa
"We like to thank you so much for our stay in your beautiful Villa. We enjoyed the holiday very much. We use the swimming pool and table tennis every day. Every minute we enjoyed. Thank you so much for your trust and hospitality. Bart, Enzo, Jari, and Lima"

Daan S
Wonderful and beautiful Vila.
"We adored this wonderful and spacial beautiful Vila. We had everything we needed and even more. We enjoyed the silence, the beautiful mountains in the back. And woke up with so much birds songs what was very lovely. The Vila has everything, as well in the kitchen, as towels to use and the swimming pool is marvelous. Every night we enjoyed the beautiful stars on the porch. Its situated so lovely in the small village where you can get fresh bread and fruits in the morning. The Greek people are very! nice and polite. Also the beach was small but perfect. And there was a good supermarket and enough restaurants to chose from. You enjoyed our stay here very much!"
Cedric and family
Beautiful Villa
"We are a couple with a 1 year old boy and had a wonderful stay at the villa. The place is very beautiful and in a peaceful and quiet location, though not far from shops, restaurants and the beaches. The views and tranquility are super. Would definitely recommend a stay here"
Great Villa !
"Great Villa and very well managed. We truly enjoyed the scenery and facilities in this Villa that was a little outside a village of Armenoi."
Great Holiday
"We spend the last two weeks in Oct. in Villa Amvrosia. It´s a very nice and comfortable House and we very much enjoyed our holidays. The information-Book is complete and a lot of proposals and references is inside. A nice surprise was the Welcome-pack. Best and warm regards to the Freelance Holiday Team. We look forward to return next year."
Lovely Villa
"Lovely villa. A shame we couldn't use the outdoor facilities and garden more since it was October but the indoor jacuzzi was a big hit with my kids and really made the holiday. Freelance Holidays were very efficient. Helped me choose the right villa and the country host was hands off as we liked (but seemed very available if we needed her)"
Beautiful Villa
"The Villa was beautiful, even better than in the photos. We were given lots of information and tips, and left us to it unless we had any requirements. We would 100% recommend this villa & Pool for anyone who wants to relax in gorgeous tranquil surroundings."
Andy S
Perfect place to relax after our wedding!
"Me and my wife stayed in Villa Amvrosia for 9 days whilst we were in Crete for our wedding! From the first moment we walked in we fell in love with the place. A fantastic fruit bowl was left out for us, water beer and wine left in the fridge as well as two bottles of Raki. The villa itself is very homely and for me the plunge pool in the basement was the best thing! The pool area is huge with plenty of seating, we threw a bit of a post wedding party for some of our guests and they all loved the place. The BBQ area is also amazing, we did cook a bit on it but you could quite easily throw a huge party and cater for everybody. Finally the views are phenomenal, they added to the magic of the whole holiday. We'd recommend Villa Amvrosia to anybody who wants to spend their holiday in a beautiful chilled out venue in beautiful Crete! *****"

Enjoy Greek life
"Whole week long we enjoyed the beautiful view, quietness, birds and of course the swimming pool, especially our kids. If you really want to enjoy Greek life, don't hesitate. Special recommandation: lunchroom Nektar in Vamos, a small village nearby"
Villa was excellent
"We booked Villa Amvrosia for our honeymoon (having spent a week in New York the week before). We wanted a peaceful, comfortable rural retreat to relax and we weren't disappointed. The attention to detail in the villa was excellent - there wasn't anything that we couldn't find when we needed it. The panoramic views are a joy to behold and having breakfast by the pool was fantastic. The local village (Armenoi) is small but had a few great tavernas with butchers and mini market. The coastal village (Kalyves) is 10mins drive and had a great supermarket and a sleepy but relaxing beach feel. Our highlight was a visit to Elafonisi with its gorgeous beach and it was a comfortable drive on good roads. Diane was excellent and very knowledgable. After an unfortunate stay in Chania General Hospital, she took the time to visit which was beyond the call of duty and very much appreciated. Great place, great hosts and thoroughly recommended! ”"

"This is a stunning villa with fantastic views of the mountains and the birds of prey that inhabit them. Situated on the outskirts of the village its location is quiet and very rural with the tinkling of goat bells, sheep bleating and mules he hawing. The rooms all have AC and are decorated to a very high standard. The pool was the best of any villa I have rented. The local village has a great butcher, baker and the main taverna by the river is wonderful as are the portions. (the doggy bag was great for the next days lunch) . Nearby Kalives has more choice for shopping (we managed to get a wheelchair tyre replaced. Wholly recommend The Green Pepper Taverna to the west of the town. We so enjoyed being at the villa that we didn't go on as many days out as we had planned but will definitely return."
Excellent Villla
"Villa Amvrosia was clean, roomy and we loved the fact that a maid came mid week to change towels and sheets. Diane (the rep in Crete) was very helpful and left lots of useful information including updates by Email and helped organise a taxi when we requested one. Very pleased with the excellent customer service from initial booking through to regular updates prior to our holiday dates. . "

"What an incredible place to stay. The house is exactly as pictured and was in beautiful shape. Good location for exploring central and western Crete...we were here for the second week of our honeymoon and it was a perfect place to spend some lazy days relaxing at the pool and enjoying the views, and some days out exploring the island."
Elizabeth Murphy
SO good we came back!
"Fantastic views. Beautifully laid out and spacious villa. Lots of places around the villa to sit in sun or shade. Just a lovely place to relax and enjoy your holiday. The owners and Freelance staff are very helpful, lots of info to get your hols started. Enjoyed our stay here with friends last year (2013), more of the same this year. Thank you."

Fantastic experience
"Another very happy visit to Crete and the village of Armeni. We had just 6 days free over the Jubilee weekend and half term holiday and decided to escape London and the bad weather and head back to Crete to find out whether we could repeat the fantastic experience we had in the neighbouring Villa Galania four years ago. I am very glad to say that we were not disappointed. We love the sleepy village and the fantastic views across the valley to the mountains and the hill top ruins of Aptera. Armeni is very pretty - a big church that chimes out the hours, the freshwater springs and stream, the trees around the central square. The new bakery, the wonderful delicatessen, small supermarket and taverna mean that you don't actually have to travel anywhere to eat very well indeed and in fact we found the provisions in Armeni, just a 10 minute walk from the villa, better than in the larger local town of Kalives although there is more choice of eating out and the possibility of buying a newspaper and souvenirs there if you want to. We didn't feel the need to leave the very beautiful villa more than once or twice - we were there to recuperate and for one of our daughter's to revise without distractions of any kind, especially the internet! We quickly slipped into reading, swimming, relaxing - sleeping so well with the Cretan breeze coming through the windows and the sounds of the goat bells and the occasional call of the peacock from the aviary. The moon was full while we were there and so we had twice the landscape for our money - one sunlit and green during the day and the other silver and sparkling at night. The villa is very well equipped - we had everything we needed and more - lots of space and different places to sit and lounge, each with its own view. We really appreciated the details such as the fly screens at every window and the way in which the villa has been placed so that you can neither disturb or be disturbed by the villa next door. The jacuzzi was a bonus - very cool on the hottest days and yet another way of relaxing! We particularly like the proximity to Chania and although we did not visit this holiday we knew that it is only a 30 minute, easy drive, as it is to the airport, which reduces the stress and time for travel that can sometimes dominate a short holiday. We really like the coastal drive out of Kalives and towards Georgioupolis and managed to find the idyllic little cove that we visited last holiday where you can swim in a warm, crystal clear sea and watch the tropical looking fish swimming below. We have found a little bit of paradise that we love, and we hope that the Greek economy continues to be supported by visitors from the UK who are made so welcome by Cretans and that our own economy allows us to enjoy some more holidays there in the future. As you can tell, we are completely smitten! The only possible suggestions for further improvement would be to leave clearer instructions for some of the equipment such as the washing machine and the TV/DVD. We weren't successful and didn't want to risk breaking anything by pressing the wrong buttons! As it was, the weather was so good that we hand washed clothes and did not need to watch films or TV but I can imagine that in cooler weather or with younger children it might have been a bit annoying not to have known how to work these machines. John, Jo, Lily and Rosa."

Have had a lovely and relaxing holiday
"We have just returned from a stay at Villa Amvrosia. It is a lovely villa situated in a beautiful and quiet site. The accomodation is excellent with both indoor and outdoor pools. We loved the animals around us - the goats and sheep en route to the village with the coffe house and bakery that had excellent capuccinos. Definitely would consider returning to same place again."
Jennifer F
This is a GREAT villa
"This is a GREAT villa. Beautiful pool and fantastic location. We loved the outdoor grill. The "book" provided by freelance holidays with descriptions of places on the island, etc. was a lifesaver-- worth the villa cost itself. "
John F

Flights to both Chania (CHQ) & Heraklion (HER) Airports

We don't book flights, we prefer to stick to what we love doing ( finding the best villas in the best places) below is  a rather good app showing flight routes, airlines, prices with links to the airlines to book.

** Top Tip **, if you avoid flying at the weekends or in different durations, 5,10 16 nights, flights are often a lot cheaper, and remember with Freelance you can arrive ANY DAY at our villas, good eh ...

If you prefer to talk;

Alan Garner - IAG If you prefer to speak to someone, we have found Alan Garner at VHG  Flights (A fully ATOL bonded company ATOL5889) very helpful (mention our  name when booking), you can call Alan on 01444 225 618 during office hours.

A ‘boutique’ style Villa with an up to date finish more in keeping with the sophisticated Cote d’Azur than a Villa on the edge of a small, albeit charming, village in Western Crete, it is the Villa's very incongruity which makes it, for us at Freelance, who have a liking for the quirky, totally irresistible.

The hillside accommodation ranges over 3 floors with a *heated Jacuzzi pool on the lower level making an extravagant addition to the beautifully tiled L shaped swimming pool set into a deck at tree top level; which rather like the ‘house that Jack built’ is also at ground floor level of the Villa.

An open plan living area, on the raised first floor, warmed out of season by an inset glass fronted fireplace, leads onto a large covered balcony with views of the pool and the dramatic White Mountains where the village of Stilos sits picturesquely on the lower slopes.

The kitchen is equipped, as befits a Villa of this quality, with large fridge freezer, dishwasher, coffee maker and microwave and has a stable door to a small balcony that catches the morning sun. There is also a guest W.C. at this level.

Stairs lead down to the lower ground floor and the aforementioned jacuzzzi pool where a door and  poolside picture windows opening to a little shady copse of holme oak. Also at this level is the single bedroom with a generously wide single bed and a shower room with hydro massage shower.

At the top of the Villa, the master double bedroom has a good run of wardrobes, a smart ensuite shower room and French doors to a covered balcony. A twin bedroom also has French doors to its own balcony and both bedrooms share  a bathroom with a curved corner bath.

At the entrance to the delightful landscaped gardens, chiselled out of the stony Cretan hillside, a pretty aviary holds a pair of peacocks, who display their colours to a host of other small birds and  along a stone path and past the entrance to the lower house level, a small copse makes a shady setting for a benched ‘picnic area’. Alongside the picnic area, a spacious covered outside kitchen/dining area has been constructed, with a barbecue, wood oven, fridge, and sink with running water.

Steps from here lead up to the pool deck where the beautifully tiled L shaped pool is just a few further steps from the door into the living area.

* The indoor pool is heated during the cooler months of April, May & October only.
