Villa Vigla, Samonas, Crete    Sunday Times

Free wifi

The restoration of this delightful village house has  brought about  the metamorphosis of a 200 year old village house into a cool and mellow holiday Villa bursting with original features and complimented by a private sparkling free form pool with dimensions of 6.7m x 3.4m and depth of 1.4m deepest and 0.60m shallowest.

The owners,  Stamatis & Despina,  have meticulously preserved many original features whilst giving them a fresh contemporary twist.  Thus thick stone walls are left unadorned whilst plastered ones are given a delicate hint of colour; original decorative floor tiles see a second life as wall tiles in the kitchen; heavy beamed ceilings are painted white, basking the space below  in light and modern understated classic furnishings and fittings reinforce the Villa's status in the present day and offer up to date comfort.

The sunny and well equipped kitchen/breakfast room, where wood stained cupboards are set under white marble worktops has pretty half glazed double doors open directly from the stone paved courtyard, where meals will usually be taken.

Both bedrooms are also at this ground floor level, the twin bedroom and  bathroom opening from a central hall  and across the way, the double bedroom with an ensuite shower room, also with  double doors opening onto the courtyard.

Climbing the staircase from the hall, the whole of the first floor is open up to its white painted eaves with uncluttered L shaped lengths of cushioned sofas. An open fireplace keeps everyone cosy, if the evenings are cool either end of the season. During the summer double doors can be thrown open onto a spacious balcony with stunning views down to the sea, sparkling in the distance. A galleried reading room, accessed via a short flight of open stairs overlooks the living room.

Outside, across the covered courtyard, a gate leads to a sunny garden, planted with herbs and scented flowering shrubs where the lovely free form pool is surrounded by paved sun terraces. There is also a small orchard of citrus and pomegranate trees where a vegetable patch yields a supply of home grown salad vegetables during the growing season to carry back to the kitchen.

The village itself, a peaceful backwater on the beautiful lower slopes of the White Mountains attracts the occasional tourist to its taverna serving traditional home cooking and to those, ‘in the know’, who come to admire the stunning Byzantine Church of Agia Nikolaos nestling at the bottom of a neighbouring valley. Kept locked, it's Roussa and Kosta, Despina's parents who are the key holders and will be very happy to take guests at Villa Vigla  on a guided tour of its beautiful 13th centuries frescoes. The Church’s location and artwork is widely considered to be amongst the most beautiful on the island.

From this rural idyll it is a mere 15 mins drive to the sandy beaches of Kalives via the slightly  larger neighbouring village of Stylos which offers more by way of shopping and tavernas and if you take your water bottles you can fill them up at  the source of the bottled water of the same name - for gratis.

A lovely village location, amazing sea views and a short walk to a village taverna we consider makes Villa Vigla, worthy of appearing high in the top five of any Villa list for small families or couples.

Villa Vigla, Crete Latest review - Villa Vigla, Crete
Great Week!
"We were a family of four from the UK looking for some warm weather and relaxation in late May 2018. Villa Vigla was a great place to get away from it all, located in the sleepy hamlet of Samonas, tucked away in the hills behind Chania . The location has spectacular views of the mountains and the coast. The property has great charm, and has been sympathetically renovated to the highest standards and with some style by it's Cretan owner. For walkers, the Diktamos Gorge is literally around the corner, providing a low key alternative to the Samarian Gorge..."

Absolutely loved our stay
"We absolutely loved our stay at Villa Kyriaki. The place was beautiful and Kyriaky is a great host. She made us various traditional dishes to try each day of our stay as well as wine, raki, and olive oil from the area. The Taverna down the road in Kalathenes is definitely worth a visit with delicious food and a great view. Overall, it was a great place to get away and served as our home base while we toured much of the western side of Crete. It is about an hour drive to Balos and Elafonisi Beaches which are amazing and 40mins to the Venetian Harbor in Chania. We would definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a relaxing vacation in a small village with many activities within an hour drive away."
Sally
Amazing location
"We had a fantastic stay in Villa Viglia. We appreciated very much the detailed description how to get to the Location and that it really was like shown on the Pictures. The mother of the owner was very friendly - a pity that we cannot speak Greek. All in all, we enjoyed our vacation a lot and will clearly recommend Freelance to our friends"
Sabine S
Charming Location
"The Location is as charming and nice as shown on the picture - a real Quality Cottage and the guidance how to get there and the instructions in the house itself were really precise and helpful. We can recommend this place and Freelance 100%"

Beautiful holiday home
"We arrived late in the evening and had to find our way in the darkness. Thanks to the detailed descriptions we didn't get lost. When we entered the house we were full of joy about this beautiful holiday home. In the morning I woke up with the first sunlight and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings. The rich garden with the delicious grapes and pomgrenades - it felt like paradise. The week we spent in Villa Vigla was a perfect mixture of lazyness and rest and interesting trips over the island. We walked the Imbros gorge down and up again and found out, that the afternoon is the best time to walk there. The busses with organized tourist groups have gone and it is incredibly silent and peaceful in the gorge. We found the same peaceful atmosphere in the monastery Agia Triada on Akrotiri peninsula. The old town and the harbour of Chania was very beautiful in the evening sunlight. And the trip to Elafonissi was nice too but rather crowded. I would like to see this spectacular long beach in winter. Many thanks to Roussa and her open hearted hospitality. We had a coffee at her house and chatted with the help of google translator. That was really funny! She also left so many generous gifts of fruit on the table which we found and enjoyed after coming back from our trips over the island. Delicious! We hope to come back soon! Stephanie, Manfred, Leonie and Pia”"

My son loved it in 2015 and we loved it in 2017
"We liked the house ,the location, the local tavern, Chania but Rosa was a jewel We had many very funny conversations with the help of some raki and Rosa's Computer dictionary, the roads are fine, no problem to get to the house just use you TomTom on your iPad or iPhone,."

So cozy, so amazing
"There are few things as pleasant in life as sitting under an olive tree near the pool at the Villa Viglia. The villa itself has spacious, comfortable rooms with beautiful gardens and lovely views of the sea.. So cozy, so amazing :) ..a piece of heaven :)"

Translation:We spent 4 very pleasant days in Villa Vigla whose owners have preserved the soul through a very successful renovation. For those looking for peace, authenticity in a charming environment, everything was perfect, from the reception to the departure."

Translation: The house is as beautiful and charming as it is in the photos. The warmth and warmth of our hosts is a special highlight! We felt very comfortable. Since the village is located in the mountains, a rental car is highly recommended, also from here to explore the west of Crete. In the evening we liked to be in the small tavern of the village, only a few minutes walk away, and could enjoy here with traditional food and cordial hostesses a fantastic view of the sea."

Lovely Villa, magical gardens
"Lovely villa with magical gardens....we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Very efficient booking and very pleasant always. This was our first holiday with Freelance and we will certainly book again and recommend to others."

Great House
"We had a great time at the Villa. It's on the top of a mountain so there is a nice breeze and it gets cool at night. You need a hire car for transportation."
Holly
Stunning!
"“We enjoyed a thoroughly relaxing week at the villa which is surrounded by stunning countryside - the sea views were far better than expected! The pool and garden are very private and ideal for solitude - surrounded by the dulcit tones of the doves, goats, cockerel and locals! Couldn't have asked for a better holiday!”"

Transation: We had a great week in this lovely home. The house is quiet, the welcome basket makes us very happy and allowed to have the drink of the first evening ready, which is very appreciable. The few minor problems during the week (problem of pump / water flow in particular) were resolved very quickly."
Tina
Gorgeous house and wonderful location
"Villa Vigla, Gorgeous house and wonderful location. Really enjoyed being in a proper village. Helpful instructions and brilliant solution to having locked ourselves out of Villa Zara. "

<We spent a fantastic week in the beautiful Villa Viglia their equipment and location leaves nothing to be desired. Extremely friendly, we were greeted by Rousa and cared for during the week. Here Greek hospitality is capitalized. We will gladly come again!>"

Wonderful Villa Vigla
"What a fantastic place Villa Vigla is , we loved our stay their in August 2015. The accommodation is beautiful and very spacious inside, and the gardens and pool are spectacular , we spent a huge amount of time in the pool on an afternoon when it was very hot after going to the beach at Kalives which is about 20 minutes drive. The village of Samonas is charming with a restaurant called Eagles Nest which is a short walk from the villa , the food is typical Greek and delicious we are all vegetarian and the choice of dishes was excellent . Armeni village is a short drive from Samonas and has shops and some very good places to eat it also has a bakery and a small supermarket. "
Bjorn
Wonderful inside and outside
"We had some wonderful days at Villa Vigla, and our host Rossea made it special for us. Coffee in her little yard, fresh eggs and grapes seems almost like a dream for city people like us. She also cleaned the house every second day, which was pure luxury and the house appeared always clean and fresh. A remote place with absolutely no sign of tourism in the little village of Samosas, 45 minutes from Chania. The house is wonderful inside and outside, and we will be back - Once again, thank you for a great vacation on Crete, Bjorn "
Kathryn and family
"Villa Vigla was an absolutely amazing experience. From day 1 everything was exactly as advertised. The home was both beautiful and comfortable with the perfect balance of remoteness to city access. The caretaker of the home was more than hospitable and she did everything in her power to make us feel welcomed...she did a particularly great job with our little one who loved the farm! Perfect size for a family, great pool to relax in on lazy mornings, amazing mountain views, and 15 minute beach access to Kalyves. The owners of The Eagle's Nest (the little taverna right down the road) were great as well. I can't recommend Vigla enough and if we get the opportunity, we will definitely be back"
Elizabeth S
Just Perfect
"My partner and I had a wonderful time in this charming cozy villa. Everything was perfect and we were very sad to leave this paradise. Samonas is a tiny village with only a few houses with very welcoming people and has a delicious taverna "the eagles nest" run by lovely people. Roussa welcomed us and was an absolute delight. I highly recommend staying here as the winding roads are certainly worth the trip. The view from the balcony and pool area was beautiful."
Sharon Jay
Villa Vigla is superb
"Villa Vigla is superb. Located in the hills in the tiny village of Samonas, with stunning sea and mountain views, the villa and its grounds have provided us with the perfect peaceful holiday. On scorching days there is a pool to cool off in and we spent much of our time sipping the local wine whilst reading and looking over the valley to Kalyves. One of many highlights is just how friendly the locals are. Roussa, the owner's mother, goes out of her way to welcome guests with her hospitality, Greek coffee and home pressed Raki, of course! There are also fantastic walks to local tavernas and we had some great evenings eating at The Eagles Nest where you can enjoy traditional Cretan food, whilst taking in a stunning view. We left Villa Vigla not wanting to come home but knowing that we will book again for next year. If you like your holidays to be away from the crowds in friendly and stunning surroundings, then staying in this homely, comfortable villa will be a great choice. The villa exceeded our expectations. Thank you. Sharon Jay"
Lynda Raitt
Wonderful , wonderful place.
"Had a brilliant week here, locals are so, so friendly. The villa is beautiful with stunning views all around. The food at The Eagles Nest is local and very tasty. We never managed to get there sober as you pass Rosa's house on the way and if she sees you, you are invited in for a drink and a taste of the local seasonal delicacy. Met some colourful locals here who were either retired or local olive farmers. Even though our Greek was basic; topics ranged from politics and farming through to differences between the personnel traits of mountain folk to lowland Cretans. Amazing what a few Rakis can do!!"
Janet
Incredible!!
"Villa Vigla is a stunning villa, in a stunning village. The villagers are unbelievably friendly and Roussa, the owner's mother, is wonderful. She was on hand to sort any issues, give us fresh vegetables from the garden and generally make us feel very welcome. Can't recommend this place highly enough."
Janet Dallas
We loved Villa Vigla
"We loved Villa Vigla, so pretty with sympathetic restoration and well equipped. We really enjoyed the pool and the lovely view down to the sea. Roussa completely spoiled us and we had two lovely mornings at her house tasting her home made pancakes, soft cheese and honey - somehow the language barrier didn't seem to matter. We ate grapes from the vine in the courtyard and just enjoyed the peace and quiet. We had a great welcome at the 'Eagles Nest' Taverna and the food was excellent."
Jacqueline Davies
The Perfect Mountain Hideaway
"We had the perfect end to our (10th) visit to Crete this year, staying at Villa Vigla. It is authentic Crete, but with an elegant modern twist. Probably the best villa we've ever had and certainly the best hosts, Roussa and Yiannis who showered us with edible treats and coffee. The village too is lovely (and very welcoming) and they were busy brewing this year's Raki when we arrived (October). We made full use of the garden produce (grapes, tomatoes, sweet chillies etc) and the small but lovely pool. A highlight was Yiannis guiding us to the breathtaking Byzantine church at Agios Nikolaios, set ina stunning gorge via a fairly hairy mountain road! The medieval wall paintings were lovely, but it was the atmosphere and setting that made it so special. As the weather was exceptionally hot, we did little apart from relaxing, local walks (the 3000 year old olive tree is well worth it, with the cyclamen in bloom) and use the excellent barbecue (our local kittens enjoyed too!) and Roussa's olive oil and Raki, mmm. Just one trip further afield to re-visit Ancient Falasarna (Minoan site) on the NW Coast followed by a swim at the lovely beach. We ate every meal outdoors as the garden provided shade somewhere all day and the peace and quiet was wonderful Couldn't ask for more - quite perfect."
Jonathan Whitaker
Excellent Villa, Superb Views
"An excellent villa in a charming hillside village. Superb views and great walks nearby. Very welcoming community who are proud of their traditions and generous with their hospitality. The owners and the maid could not have been more helpful and the property was extremely well prepared and maintained. , the owner's mother-in-law, was particularly kind, welcoming and courteous. A great location for a relaxing and authentic break - but with easy access to the coast and Chania - strongly recommended."
Paul Duffin
Villa is beautiful
"We thought that Villa Vigla is probably the nicest place we have stayed at. The villa is beautiful and the view and surrounding area amazing! We liked all the main facilities being on the ground floor as well."
Lynne Zeffert
A Little Piece of Paradise
"Dear Freelance We would like to say how beautiful Villa Vigla was. It was much better than we envisaged. The pool and garden areas were really pretty and the amaeities of the villa very good indeed. We were very lucky to meet the owner Stamatis who was very helpful. We were also invited to Rousos (Stamatis's mother-in-law)for morning coffee and she made us some very tasty cheese pies and a very tempting sponge cake. We would definately recommend this villa. If you want peace and tranquility with amazing views then this is the place for you!"
Alison Paintin
Excellent, you will not be disappointed
"We have just returned form a glorious 10 days at Villa Vigla in Samonas, Crete. First of all we would like to say how impressed we were with all the directions, information, maps and local info provided for us by Freelance Holidays before and at the villa. It was so useful thank you. This villa, its character and location exceeded our expectations. It was wonderful. The views are stunning. We wanted something with a bit of character and we were not disappointed. Its been so well renovated, there is a real feel of space in this secluded spot. Its extremely comfortable, well equipped and has everything you need and more. We spent a few days just by the pool, soaking up the excellent views and enjoying the peace and quiet (and the various noises of nature, like cicadas and cockerels!) The owner's Mother Rousa lives in the village. She invited us to hers for Cretan coffee. She was always a friendly smile and wave as we went by. supplying us with cucumbers and chillies from the crop, not forgetting the Raki !! The local taverna was disappointing. It always looked shut, but its not, you have to go in and make a noise, then it will open for you. This means though that you are the only customers so it lacks the atmosphere it might have had. The lady though is a delight and you will get good food and excellent service. Look out for the local music nights on Fridays that are advertised locally. We went to a taverna in Stylos and had a wonderful night there well into the night with live music and greek dancing :)) All the taverns in the area serve excellent food. Kalyves was a great location to eat on the sea front. We particularly liked Kritiko Taverna. Almerida was lovely in the day but felt like Benidorm at night. We also found a lovely village taverna in Aptera called The Cretan Corner which had stunning mountain views. Highly recommend the food and service there. The best lamb was had. "

Flights to both Chania (CHQ) & Heraklion (HER) Airports

We don't book flights, we prefer to stick to what we love doing ( finding the best villas in the best places) below is  a rather good app showing flight routes, airlines, prices with links to the airlines to book.

** Top Tip **, if you avoid flying at the weekends or in different durations, 5,10 16 nights, flights are often a lot cheaper, and remember with Freelance you can arrive ANY DAY at our villas, good eh ...

If you prefer to talk;

Alan Garner - IAG If you prefer to speak to someone, we have found Alan Garner at VHG  Flights (A fully ATOL bonded company ATOL5889) very helpful (mention our  name when booking), you can call Alan on 01444 225 618 during office hours.

Village life on Crete
Sleeps 4

Squirrelled away in the village of Samonas, overlooking the north coast, Villa Vigla is a 200-year-old knuckle of exposed stone and secret suntraps, draped with vines and bougainvillea. A 15-minute drive will take you to two sandy beaches at Kalives, but the real pleasure comes from staying put in Samonas, taking hours over a slow-cooked tsigariasto (stew) in the village taverna, and visiting the nearby church of Agios Nikolaos to marvel at the 13th-century frescoes. Chania airport is a 40-minute drive.
