Manolis House, Agia Paraskevi, Crete         Free wifi

Manolis House stands at the far end of the village and with lovely sea views over the olive groves, this well furnished and designed family house stands in its own enclosed gardens with pretty flowers and a good selection of herbs, as well as shady trees and a sheltered purpose built barbecue area. There are two sunbeds in the garden.

Inside, separated by the entrance hall, is a modern well equipped kitchen/dining room with a convenient window to the side that gives access to the barbecue area.

The spacious and comfortable living room features a brick fireplace and patio doors to the terrace.

At first floor level and reached by a narrow wooden staircase are two bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with two twin beds. Both bedrooms have sloping pine ceilings, French windows and wonderful sea views, even from a prone position! There's a shower room off the first floor landing and a second one downstairs off the entrance hall.

One of the sofas in the living room could be used as an extra bed for a resilient child.  To the rear of the garden is a gate with a few steps leading down into Manolis' olive grove.

Location of Manolis House
Agia Paraskevi, Crete

Hidden away on the south coast between Agia Galini and Moni Preveli and a good 2 hours drive from Chania Airport, the tiny hamlet of Agia Paraskevi, stands high on the hillside looking out over the Lybian Sea. Virtually abandoned for 25 years, the village has over the past decade been slowly restored and brought back to life and now provides the ultimate place to unwind!

Stunning Views
"This house is wonderful. The instructions to get there are comprehensive, so we found it no problem. It sits on the edge of the village and so it is incredibly private, with stunning views. The house was ready for us, with fruit and raki, and we relaxed immediately. We spent lots of time in the garden, enjoying the coolness of the wind and the splendour of the sea view. The house itself is well- appointed and is a comfortable space for 4 people to occupy on holiday. It is equipped with everything you need. The tip to freeze bread worked well as it is a wee way from the shops. We stocked up en route and ate locally in the tavernas in the village and we particularly loved the fish at the taverna in Agia Fotini. It is beautifully situated for snorkelling, swimming, eating and drinking - perfect. We met Dafni and her brother at the house, who were super friendly and gave us some local advice. They left their contact info should we need anything, but honestly we had everything. They cleaned the house and did a bit of gardening and even left us more fruit and veg. Spilli is about 30 minutes away - it is the nearest town and is quite gorgeous. It is worth stopping there and really is not too far if you need to stock up. All in all, this house is highly recommended for a relaxing, tranquil holiday."

"La maison est idéalement située, au sud, près de la plage de Triopétra et de Ligres. Calme, beauté, la vue sur la méditerranée, des citrons dans le jardin.... rien à ajouter tout était parfait."

"Once again, a great time in AP, despite a 24 hour thunderstorm. Roll on May"

Beautiful location
"Manoli's House is in a beautiful location and the accommodation is simple and clean. We found the Pegasus taverna food very good this time and an easy walk from our accommodation."

Excellent accommodation
"In the past we have found Freelance's support excellent. Any problems in resort have been handled promptly, and pleasantly, by Diane. The accomodation is excellent, with a well equipped kitchen and reasonably comfortable lounge. (If one has to be indoors the lighting could be improved). The addition of a washing machine was a welcome surprise. Our main interests are walking, eating and drinking, in no particular order, and all these can be catered for locally, with the latter two being particularly economical in the area. We would recommend Ligres taverna, and feel that the cooking at the Apotheke, Triopetra, is some of the best in the area, with Anthony the owner very knowledgable. It was a bit off putting to see August's lamb chops running around the taverna, as Anthony is currently hand feeding her. "

"Excellent all round!"

"This was a fantastic experience,we enjoyed every minute, from the trek over the moutains to the peace and quiet of overlooking the Lybian sea from our terrace.Quality house, well furnished. It was so quiet and relaxing . No shops for many miles, so top up on your way down at Spili. No use having the bbq if you do not have meat!It is a well equipped one too. We found that the taverna on the beach at Ligres was really good, he also put 6 eggs and two loaves of bread on our bill.We also found the food here to be excellent,it is very hard to spend over 25 Euros on a meal for two, inc wine and a tip! Spili seemed a bit touristic, and expensive, we pressed on towards Heraklion and had a great day by the sea in Bali, en route to the airport. later eating at a great spot called Fodeli Beach, with the sun setting into the sea, and a very good meal. Just off the motorway towards Heraklion."
David and Carrie Richardson
"We thought that Manoli's house was an excellent base for a fantastic holiday. The creation of new paved ( but twisting) roads to Triopetra gives access to a range of beautiful and deserted beaches. We were really annoyed to find one morning that another couple were on "our" stretch of beach just east of Ligres !! We will certainly return."
Mark Williams
"Heaven!! Our second trip to Agia Paraskevi was even more idyllic. Manoli's House was beautiful- never been so relaxed our entire lives. The beaches at Tria Petra and Agios Pavlos were our favourites and the the taverna did scrumptious home cooked food- and catered very well for vegetarians. Roll on next year!!!"
Jan and Charles
"What an idyllic spot! Lovely to relax under the olive trees at the front with a gentle breeze. Walks along the beaches both ways from Ligres are good and the palm trees at Preveli worth seeing - plus the monastry itself."
Rachel and Wilkie
"What an amazing house and location and what a priviledge to be here. The only thibg we have been very decisive on is that we would like to return."
The Williams Family
"Another sublime fortnight - our third year. Unchangingly lovely."
Madeleine and Anders, Sweden
"A wonderful week in this part of Crete. the kids loved Ligres beach and spent most of the time in the water. After jogging. the outdoor shower is just magnificent with its views over the Libyan Sea."

"Our second visit to Manolis House and it has fully lived up to its expectations."

"This was our second trip to Crete. Manolis House lovely and peaceful."

"<p>We thoroughly enjoyed the two weeks we spent in Agia Paraskevi this year. We've been travelling to Crete regularly since 1981, and have been to numerous destinations with Freelance, and this year were looking for something a bit more out of the way. Out of the way Agia Paraskevi certainly is. The village looks out over the Libyan sea from the lower slopes of Mt Siderotos. This is a remote area of southwest Crete into which tourism has made virtually no inroads as yet, and the landscape is glorious, with spectacular mountain and coast views everywhere you go.</p> <p>This corner of Crete is thought by many to have the best beaches on the island. I can't vouch for them all, as we liked 'our' beach, Ligres, so much we didn't spend any time on the others. Ligres, which advertises itself as 'Best Beach' on its road signs (I would agree!) is about five minutes drive from AP on an asphalt road. Except at weekends, when there might be 20-25 people around (maybe more in August) it is quiet, empty and unspoiled by sunbeds and umbrellas. If you fancy going to Triopetra and Agios Pavlos the shortest, most direct way, along the dirt track, you'll need a four-wheel drive. Otherwise it's the long way round - but this long way round, which takes you up to the main Spili-Agia Galini Road and then down another winding road to whichever beach you've chosen, is so beautiful that you won't mind the hour's journey. Triopetra and Agios Pavlos are both busier beaches than Ligres, but still not what you'd call 'busy', and they do have sunbeds and umbrellas. They all have tavernas, of course.</p> <p>The roads are typical Cretan rural roads, narrow and often pot-holed, but fine as long as you drive with care. You'll want to go slowly anyway - exploring the landscape is one of the great pleasures of being there.</p> <p>Agia Paraskevi itself is really lovely - beautifully placed between sea and mountains and with wonderful views all around. Anyone who cares about sustainable tourism will be heartened, as I was, to see how it's possible to bring an abandoned village back to life. The old stone houses have been beautifully restored with meticulous care and skill, and turned into extremely comfortable accommodation.</p> <p>The little cafeneion, run by Manolis and Roula, can supply basic needs, and Roula cooks simple meals. There are tavernas at Ligres beach and in Kerame, but it's nice to be able to have dinner without having to worry about driving home in the dark, and we ate there a lot. Roula and Manolis ran a cafe bar in Rethymno for many years, and Manolis makes a huge variety of cocktails and delicious ice creams (we particularly liked his Minoan Princess). A boon for children, this - and for grownups like ourselves with sweet teeth.</p> <p>Much as we enjoyed the drives we took around the countryside, I'd have liked to do more walking. Agia Paraskevi looks like a walker's paradise, and I think it would be in Spring and Autumn, but we struck a serious heat wave so I didn't do much. Next time!</p>"
