Kissamos, Crete

The village was once called Kastelli, due to the great Venetican walls that surrounded the town which was an important harbour for the ancient city of Polyrinia inland. Today small parts of these castlelike walls are still intact in a few places around the village. Kissamos is the largest village in the region outside of Chania and is used prodominantly by the locals in the area for banking, shopping & filling up with petrol.

There are several shops, supermarkets & places to eat, for a quick snack, along the main road that runs through Kissamos. For a slower pace of life, head to Tzanakaki Sq & Skalidi Str where you will find interesting craft shops, more tavernas, coffee shops and sweet shops offering the typical Cretan loukoumades (donuts) drizzled in chocolate syrup plus ice cream shops to indulge & satisfy that sweet tooth.

Opposite the square is the Kissamos Archaeological museum which houses the artifacts from the immediate region and an amazing moziac floor from the Byzantine era. It is quite a small museum but worth the two Euro entrance fee.

The waterfront promenade of Kissamos provides a lovely atmosphere for an evening meal,  breakfast or just a stroll along the front whilst listening to the waves lap up against the shore. A couple of very well known tavernas along the promonade for serving up fresh fish & local Cretan dishes.

On the far west side of Kissamos  the town’s sandy beach of Mavros Molos (Kissamos Beach) where you can find several tavernas dotted along its edge as well as sunbeds and umbrellas to use for the day. The far west side is the place to lay your towel if the sea is rough, as it is usually calm on that side.

Staying in Kissamos region is ideal if you wish to visit the ‘must see’ beaches on Crete. The clear waters of Falassarna beach is only 25min drive away and the sandy shores with pink coral at Elafonissi beach is about an hours drive south of Kissamos. The boat ride to the exotic beach of Balos and Gramvousa Island leaves the main harbour on a daily basis from May onwards and is based just a few kilometer outside the village.

Walkers will be delighted in Kissamos to take a hike up to the ancient site of Polyrinia or a walk through the Deliana Gorge  in Spring to see the wildflowers.

The picturesque Chania harbour is also a must when on Western Crete with its maze of colourful backstreets and impressive Venetian lighthouse. Chania is about a 35min drive from Kissamos village.
