Scopello, Sicily

An utterly delightful medieval village set on a ridge above a rocky coastline interspersed by small sand and pebble coves with water as clear as any in the med. Scopello is centred around its Baglio the agricultural hub of the original village and now centre piece to an atmospheric courtyard partially shaded by a huge eucalyptus tree under which tables and chairs from the various restaurants and gelatoria are laid out.

A variety of artisan shops, a post office, bank and bakery can be found around the cobbled village square or among the few narrow streets, as well as a handful of trattorias and cafes. When we visited, in an open gateway from the square an old man with a weather worn face was selling bunches of fragrant oregano, honey, beautiful green olive oil and various vegetables, fresh from his walled garden.

Gavin Maxwell, who came here in 1953 began The Ten Pains of Death, the book he wrote here, When I first came to Scopello, I thought it was the most beautiful place I had ever seen. At that time it was utterly remote and he had had to journey the last few miles from Castellammare on foot nowadays road access is a little easier, but when arriving in the village it continues to feel as though you have come to a welcome end to your journey, a tremendously appealing holiday destination.

Below the village is one of the most beautiful coastlines in the whole of Sicily with many small coves etched out of the jagged rocky coastline. In one such cove sit the crumbling relics of an abandoned tuna fishery the Tonnera di Scopello and a more beautiful setting it is hard to imagine. Used for a scene in the film Oceans Twelve, it was also home to Gavin Maxwell during the period he lived and worked in Scopello.

In August when those beaches accessible by car become very popular, particularly at the weekends, there are a string of beautiful bays within a half an hours walk of the entrance to the nearby Reserva Naturale dello Zingaro and always relatively undisturbed. The nature reserve was established in 1981 and offers excellent walking trails, in spring and autumn when it is possible to walk the 7 km to San Vito Lo Capo entrance, above the coast and below the mountains soaring upwards to 1,000m don't attempt this though in July or August, when it is far too hot. 3 kms south of Scopello, the lovely Baia di Guidaloca has a lovely sand and shingle bay, excellent for swimming and 8 kms away the Gulfo di Castellamare has pure sand beaches stretching for miles. For a contrast of beaches the 40 mins drive to San Vito Lo Capo is an expedition worth taking where an azure sea laps onto pure white sand.

70kms west of Palermo and 50 kms east of Trapani all the major historical sites in the western side of the island are reasonably accessible.

"We had a lovely time, the villa was comfortable and well appointed, and we liked the balconies back and front enabling us to be in/out of the sun as we wanted. The views were gorgeous. Nathalie was very friendly and informative too. We found the information in the villa very helpful. One place we ate in Scopello, which may not have been mentioned, is the Fuego. This was not as 'up market' as some of the other restaurants but the atmosphere was nice and the food good. The little supermarket and veg shop on the way to Scopello were excellent - lovely cheese, local veg and salad and cheap wine!"
