Kerames, Crete

Turning off the road after passing through the pretty spa village of Spili, you are entering a different world. As you wind towards the coast, first climbing upward towards the tiny village of Akounda, with its wonderful old wash house hidden away amongst its tiny streets, followed by equally tiny, Ardaktos then turning and winding before you cross over the ridge and catch site of the Libyan sea stretching below. Then begins the downward stretch of the journey, passing through more tiny villages where life continues in much the same way as it has for centuries, then at last, Kerames balancing on the hillside.

Sitting below the bare rocky mountainside in an oasis of greenery, surrounded by olive groves and patches of pasture, the village itself is no more than a tiny tangle of streets winding between whitewashed houses leading to the village square and an oversized Church with some lovely frescoes. A couple of cafenions offer authentic watering holes and pleasant spots to pass the time of day with the locals. In essence time has stood still and it can be very pleasant to be part of that for a short time.

A local family have recently opened a fairly well-stocked mini market where fresh bread, fruits & veg & most supplies can be found, which saves the trek back to Spili. Unless you need an ATM, which is in Spili.

A tarmac road snakes down steeply to the harbour side taverna at Agia Fotini and a succession of quiet sandy beaches and coves. Taking a right fork, the road travels westward to lagoon backed Swallows Canyon below the Moni Preveli Monastry perched on its mountain top. Footpaths and quiet roads cross the countryside making for excellent walking or cycling.

So far tourism has passed this area by and the delights of quiet sandy beaches and waterside tavernas are rich pickings for those seeking respite from a busy world.
