Holiday Villas Zante
A small island in the Ionian Sea, one hour on the ferry south of Kefalonia, Zante (otherwise known as Zakynthos) has an identity all of its own. 123 km of coastline surrounds the island which varies from sandy beaches and coves in the south, changing gradually to white pebbles in the north. The west coast has cliffs dropping into the sea with some startling and unique rock bathing platforms with tavernas with sunbeds, close to the iridescent blue sea where you can swim from the rocks and snorkel into caves. Tavernas perch high above pure white beaches the most famous of which is Navagio Beach, with its beautiful coloured sea and famous shipwreck.
The western and northern mountains are flecked with small self-contained villages ... more +
the likes of Volimes and enjoyable stopping off points for lunch when exploring the island. Agia Nicolaus is the stopping point of the ferry from Kefalonia and a pretty little harbour where sailing boats bob and you can take your own boat to explore the coastline. It is from here that trips depart to Navigio Beach itself.
Further south fertile plains make startling contrast to the rising mountains and the beaches turn sandy with laid back resorts offering popular beach facilities.
Down on the south coast, the village of Laganas has grown into a self-contained non-stop party resort leaving the resorts either side to grow at a slower pace and so in the south west the little resort of Keri Lake remains a picture postcard fishing village backed by a few tavernas and shops, where you can hire a boat to find your own beach.
Visitors to Zante also need to be aware that the island is totally obsessed by the turtles which hatch on its protected beaches and they are so important to the island that its name has become infinitely connected to these Caretta caretta.
The main town of Zante is a vibrant Greek harbour town with many tavernas and shopping amongst its streets and along its waterfront but for the best view of the town and its harbour, best seen at sunset, take the road up to Bohali, a village perched on a nearby hilltop.
Just about everything is within a 30 min drive – swim from the rocks in the morning, have lunch in a mountain village, drop down to Zakynthos town for a spot of window shopping and finish the evening at a taverna overlooking the bluest of seas, it’s all possible in one day.
